The International Stillbirth Alliance (ISA) is a global non-profit organization founded in 2003 by three bereaved mothers in the US. ISA focuses on addressing stillbirth and early newborn death through research, education, advocacy, and training. They collaborate with various stakeholders to improve global care standards and aim to end preventable stillbirths and newborn deaths1.
The 19th Annual Conference of the International Stillbirth Alliance (ISA) took place from November 3rd to 6th, 2024 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The conference included a variety of events such as the IMPROVE workshop, the inaugural ceremony, plenary sessions on topics like antenatal and intrapartum care, parallel symposia on birth defects, maternal mental health, and the use of AI in stillbirth prevention, as well as oral presentations and a parent round table. The event concluded with a memorial service, a gala dinner, and a closing ceremony featuring parents and community leaders2.
In the conference, I attended as an oral presenter to present one of my study findings. I highlighted a study conducted in rural Bangladesh to explore the prevalence of physical and psychological complications during the first 42 days postpartum among women who experienced stillbirth. Using data from the CHAMPS project, my study found that these women faced significantly higher risks of complications such as genitourinary infections, hypertension, and mental health issues compared to those with live births. The findings underscore the need for comprehensive postpartum screening, strengthened rural healthcare facilities, and specific guidelines for post-stillbirth care.
