The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) organizes writing workshops at different CHAMPS sites, bringing together authors, analysts, and senior members of the CHAMPS program office, usually for a week, to work on their cross-site manuscripts. This unique arrangement provides an opportunity for authors to consult directly with members from different sites to learn about their inner workings, collaborate with analysts for data analysis planning and interpretation, and seek feedback from program office members to ensure that the study objectives align with CHAMPS' goals.
I attended a CHAMPS writing workshop in Kilifi, Kenya, to work on my manuscript on maternal
near-miss. During the workshop, held at the Silver Palm Resort, I presented my concept note. I also shared
my initial results and received valuable
feedback from CHAMPS PI, program office members, and researchers from other CHAMPS sites, including
Mozambique, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, and Mali.
Over the course of the workshop, I revised my analysis and prepared the initial draft of my article based on
the feedback received. The collaborative environment provided opportunities to exchange ideas, learn from
experts, and engage with scientists from various CHAMPS sites. This experience significantly enhanced my
manuscript and contributed to my growth as an independent scientist.
